"Ontario Place Protectors believes that the legislative actions taken by Premier Doug Ford to pave the way for private operators constitute a serious breach of public trust."
Ontario Place Protectors is a broad coalition of organizations and citizens formed to protect our public space. Our primary concern is the Rebuilding Ontario Place Act (ROPA).
Legal Update: Supreme Court
While the Ford government initially pushed Bill 154 through without debate, our legal challenge has persisted. On January 8, 2026, the Supreme Court of Canada granted us leave to appeal. This is a historic step in holding the government accountable for bypassing Ontario's heritage and environmental laws.
What ROPA Ignores
The Rebuilding Ontario Place Act allows the Cabinet to bypass critical legislation:
Bypassed Laws
- Environmental Assessment Act
- Ontario Heritage Act
- Environmental Bill of Rights
- Provincial Growth Plan
- Provincial Planning Statement
Legal Immunity
The government cannot be challenged on:
- Contract & Restitution
- Tort & Misfeasance
- Bad Faith
- Trust & Fiduciary Obligation
Therefore, on the grounds of heritage, landscape preservation, planning, and Ontario’s commitment to constitutional democracy, OPP is challenging the Act.
