Rebuilding Ontario Place Act betrays the public trust

To Premier Doug Ford

I support Ontario Place Protectors in their quest to quash the Rebuilding Ontario Place Act 2023, (ROPA) because it not only endangers Ontario Place, it creates a dangerous precedent for removing protections from any place in Ontario and exempting the government from any legal prosecution.

The Ford Government introduced and passed ROPA in December of 2023 without any opportunity for public comment or legislative committee hearings. In the blink of a legislative eye all heritage and environmental protections as well as planning processes were suspended at Ontario Place. ROPA also exempts the Ford government from any prosecution for any illegal action it might take at Ontario Place.

The ramifications go far beyond Ontario Place. If the Rebuilding Ontario Place Act 2023 goes unchallenged, it will give the Ontario premier and cabinet a template to ignore Ontario’s laws and their responsibility to the public anywhere in the province.

Ontario Place Protectors managed to get an Application for Judicial Review of Bill 154 into the courts minutes before Bill 154, (ROPA) received Royal Assent. The Ontario government tried to have the appeal dismissed at the first case management hearing. Rather than dismissing, the appeal was moved from the Divisional Court to the Superior Court of Justice.
